My Experience

Color grading, archival restoration, technical consulting in cinematography, digital cinema, color management, and image processing. My work has spanned over sixteen years in documentary, narrative, commercial, and some advertising and branded content. My former life as a cinematographer spanned over thirteen years having lensed documentary television series, documentary features, scripted narrative feature films, and over one-hundred short documentaries, narrative films, and web series. Now I work in my lab full time.

Clients Include: CNN, BBC, VICE, Timeline, Gagosian Gallery, National Geographic, History Channel, Discovery, Buick, Mother Jones, Topic Magazine

Consulting Work: post-production workflows to include color-managed pipelines, creative intent, technical shooting methodology for digital cinematography, archival digitization, and solving novel post-production challenges for contemporary and archival projects.

Current Research: For the last three years, I’ve been experimenting with motion picture restoration using machine learning and custom Python scripting.

Management: I have extensive management experience leading post-production teams under tight deadlines through technically challenging projects both on-site and remotely across OS platforms and software. I’m an advocate of employee training and certification and have always made a point of sharing my expertise with my team through hands-on training and documentation. For the past five years, I’ve been running my own boutique post-production finishing business in New York City called Magic Lantern which has provided me with many opportunities to collaborate with other experienced colorists as well as supervise and instruct a diverse roster of junior colorists and assistant editors.

My professional writing is focused on creative intent, applied color science, cinematography, and archival restoration. Most of my writing is for those who enjoy curiosity and its proximity to our industry.
